A seedling from Cornell University breeding program grown out by John Gordon of Amherst NY. Produces large fruit, ripens in late August. Prok traces to George Slate's persimmon work at Cornell's experiment station in Geneva, New York, in the mid-20th century. The fruit is 2½ to 3 inches across, deep orange and nearly seedless, with a honey-sweet flavor and custard-like texture when fully soft, and it is often rated among the best-tasting American persimmons. Like all American persimmons it is astringent until fully ripe. An early ripener that is well suited to northern growers. A self-fertile female tree that can be kept at 15 to 20 feet with pruning, rated for zones 5 to 9.
